Khovd Province · Altai Mountains

Snow leopard tour — where nature and culture meet

Khovd Province is one of the most remarkable travel destinations in western Mongolia.

Surrounded by towering mountains, crystal-clear lakes and vast open landscapes, this region brings pristine nature, rich nomadic culture and adventure travel together. Within the rugged cliffs and high peaks of the Altai live some of the world's rarest wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, argali sheep and Siberian ibex, while golden eagles soar high across the skies.

Khovd is also one of the most ethnically diverse regions of Mongolia. The Zakhchin, Dorvod, Uriankhai, Torguud, Myangad, Oold and Kazakh peoples all continue to preserve their unique traditions and lifestyles. Travelers have the opportunity to experience authentic nomadic life, taste traditional cuisine, enjoy local music and witness centuries-old cultural customs.

The region is home to breathtaking natural attractions, including Khar Us Lake National Park, the dramatic Altai mountain ranges and the ancient rock paintings of Khoid Tsenkher Cave. Together with its untouched steppe, these wonders make Khovd a captivating destination for travelers seeking both natural beauty and cultural discovery.

Fishing in the Khentii taiga

Batshireet, in the north-east of the Khentii range, is one of Mongolia's most beautiful taiga regions.

The area lies within the Onon-Balj National Park and the basin of the Onon river, and is known for untouched wilderness: clear rivers, dense taiga forest and wide open valleys.

Its pristine taiga and clear water hold Mongolia's great freshwater fish — taimen, lenok, grayling and pike. Combined with rare wildlife and wild berries, this makes Batshireet an ideal region for sport fishing and nature-focused travel.
